Radon in Countertops by: Tammy
Hello James
I have read the reports from both the Marble Institute of America and another done by the geology department at the University of Akron.
It appears that although according to the university's findings that small amounts can be found in stone counter tops, most are lower than that of standard levels found in most homes.
There were a couple of particular stones that had a little higher emissions, but the risk is minimal as the air exchange in normal use of a house would eliminate any danger.
The Marble Institute of America's report gives an easy read of their findings. You can click on the link below to read their entire report.
I also had heard some rumblings awhile back about radon emmiting from countertops so I asked a collegue this past week who installs hard surface countertops what he knew.
He told me that it is a non-issue. There have been in depth studies by several organizations including the Marble Institute of America.
He is going to forward two reports to me and I will follow up with another post to give you the findings.
